In Bangladesh, a country with a high rate of domestic violence, it is a sad reality for countless women and children. The Covid-19 lockdown has made matters only worse. According to data from Ain o Salish Kendra, 483 women were reportedly tortured by their husbands during the period of January-October 2020, 43 percent higher than what was reported in the same period in 2019; a similar trend can be observed in the number of women murdered by their husbands. 8427 DHAKA, Dec 11, 2020 (BSS) – Fifteen-year-old Armin Akter (not the real name) was on verge of getting married two years ago, when she called local Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and pleaded for help. The UNO responded quickly and convinced her parents to stop the marriage. “Thanks to the club (Adolescent Club), I learned from there about the sufferings a girl has to endure if she gets married before 18. So I opposed to get married so early and if I wasn’t aware of this, I would have become a mother by now,” Armin said proudly. Many youths like Armin are becoming more and more aware about the dangers of child marriage from the Adolescent Clubs across the country. Around 2,100 such clubs are carrying out their activities across the country under the government’s “Accelerating Protection for Children (APC)” Project with the support from Unicef Bangladesh.

ICT training for erstwhile enclave women held in Panchagarh 419 PANCHAGARH, Dec 10, 2020(BSS) – The training on ‘Basic ICT Literacy and Improving Living Standard of Women’ was held at Debiganj upazila parished hall room of the district today. The Department of Women Affairs organised the 50-day training course for 83 women of erstwhile enclave to improve their living standard and empowerment on way to attain the sustainable development goals. On the occasion, a certificate distribution function arranged by Debiganj Upazila Women Affairs’ Office was held at the upazila parished hall room of the district. The women received training on basic ICT Literacy, computer, primary healthcare, cleanliness, personal hygiene, hygienic sanitation, prevention of trafficking of women and children, creating social awareness against child marriage, dowry and domestic violence, women empowerment and related issues in the training course. Each woman got Taka 5,000 as training allowance.
