There is an acute shortage of pure drinking water along the coast of Bagerhat. Thousands of people of several upazilas in the district are suffering from various water-borne diseases due to the month-long water crisis. The district administration and the Department of Public Health Engineering are jointly supplying water through five mobile water treatment plants in Morrelganj, Sarankhola and Mongla upazilas but that is not sufficient for the inhabitants of the areas, reports our Bagerhat correspondent.

Tajul directs DPHE authorities to provide uninterrupted water supply

DHAKA, April 13, 2021 (BSS) – Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam today directed the officials of the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) to ensure uninterrupted water supply in rural and municipal areas.
The minister also directed DPHE authorities to keep soap along with ample water supply in the hand-washing stations set up at different points of the district and upazila levels to prevent Coronavirus infection, said a press release here.
He gave the directives in a virtual view exchange meeting with DPHE officials on tackling Covid-19 and ongoing development activities.

The project styled “Community-based Water Supply in Lower Underground
Water-level Areas in Rajshahi, Naogaon and Chapainawabganj districts” has
been accomplished before the scheduled time in June next, they said.
The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) has implemented the
three-year project with an estimated cost of around Taka 32.19 crore to
ensure safe drinking water for around 1.73 lakh people living in the water-
stressed areas.
