Amherst DPW pitches road, sidewalk safety projects >Published: 7/14/2021 1:19:49 PM AMHERST A section of North Pleasant Street between North Amherst village center and the University of Massachusetts campus could see significant improvements for pedestrians, while a small portion of the same road would become one way near Kendrick Park in downtown Amherst. The two projects were presented to the Town Council Monday by Department of Public Works Superintendent Guilford Mooring. Mooring said enhanced sidewalks on North Pleasant would make the walk to and from UMass safer from the numerous apartment complexes, including North Village, Puffton Village, Brandywine, Presidential and Crestview. Town Manager Paul Bockelman said no money is set aside for the work. Plans show an 8-foot sidewalk on the west side and a 5- to 6-foot sidewalk on the other side, with bus stops removed and repositioned.

The town and Amherst Business Improvement District recently partnered to obtain a $60,000 Local Rapid Recovery Program grant from the Massachusetts Downtown Initiative that will be used to hire CivicMoxie, LLC, a women-owned planning and urban design company based in Brookline and Woodstock, Vermont. Town Manager Paul Bockelman said in a statement Tuesday that the funding comes through the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development.

Early work begins for North Amherst Library expansion North Amherst Library GAZETTE FILE PHOTO Published: 1/20/2021 10:48:32 AM AMHERST Removal of two large trees from the backyard at the North Amherst Library is a sign that a planned expansion of the 1893 building remains on track for 2021. With the trees gone from where the addition’s north wall will go, the initial steps to commence construction are taking place, Town Manager Paul Bockelman said on Tuesday. The project is being paid for by an anonymous donor.  Recently, a drilling rig was on site to take soil samples so the addition’s foundation can be designed, and the Department of Public Works, after taking away the stumps, dug test pits near the existing foundation.
