Retailers warned for not following price directive » Borneo Bulletin Online

May 13, 2021 Seven businesses were warned for failing to comply with the Seasonal Maximum Price (SMP) directive, according to the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES). It said that through the Department of Competition and Consumer Affairs (DCCA), three businesses in Tanjong Bunut, two in Tanah Jambu, one in Sinarubai and one in Pekan Bangar were issued warning letters for selling items above maximum prices. The items included: butter, milk (condensed and evaporated), margarine, ghee and flour. These offences were found during routine inspections conducted across districts, said JPES. Price inspectors also advised businesses to comply with the SMP directive and to ensure prices of goods are clearly displayed.

May 11, 2021 Lyna Mohamad Reactions have been mixed following the announcement of a directive on beef pricing issued by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS), Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE). One woman lamented that the price hike has led some restaurants to take beef dishes off their menu, adding that “it would be great if the authorities could restore the pricing to pre-COVID-19 days.” Sharing the sentiment was a housewife who used to pay BND9 per kilogramme for beef. These days, her refrigerator is void of beef, as she deems the pricing to be too high. A restaurateur who chose to remain anonymous said, “Putting it at a ceiling price may be okay for some consumers. However, for restaurant operators like us, we have to adjust and look at the demand. We cannot simply increase the price of our beef items, as it may disappoint our patrons.”

May 9, 2021 James Kon Some 57 per cent or around 47,000 households had selected to use e-census for Stage Two during stage one of the Population and Housing Census from January to February 2021, Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES) Director General Hajah Mariah binti Haji Yahya said. “The high number of participation in the e-census was a positive sign that the public has accepted the use of innovative technology. JPES is hopeful that during Stage Three, the number of families needing face-to-face interviews will be reduced,” she said. Hajah Mariah made these comments in her welcoming remarks at an e-census clinic at the lobby area of the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE) yesterday officially launched by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah.
