Negros Occidental 3rdDistrict Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Benitez assured the government is continuing its housing production programs to provide adequate housing to poor families even though there have been travel restrictions imposed to curb the spike of the coronavirus cases.
“Oo naman.. there are housing projects that are continuing despite the pandemic. Pero syempre (but of course, there’s a) slowdown, there’s a slowdown but it hasn’t completely stopped,” Benitez said during the Ugnayan sa Batasan virtual forum.
Benitez, who heads the housing panel, acknowledged that while there are many existing projects that have been left in the open, an active House oversight committee is committed to look into these abandoned properties.

Four police officers were arrested in Johannesburg on Monday in connection with the death of a man who was shot by police during a student protest last week.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed the arrests, saying the officers from the public order policing unit will appear in court this week.
“They are facing charges of murder, three charges of attempted murder and defeating the end of justice,” an IPID spokeswoman, Ndileka Cola, told local broadcaster Newzroom Afrika.
Mthokozisi Ntumba, 35, a bystander, was shot by police at close range with rubber bullets, leading to his death. He was not part of the demonstration being held by the students of Wits University in Johannesburg.

THE HOUSING backlog is expected to require up to P130 billion to close the deficit of about six million units, a legislator said at a virtual briefing Wednesday.
Representative Jose Francisco B. Benitez of Negros Occidental’s third district said the housing agencies are estimating a requirement of between P100 billion and P130 billion to address the backlog.
Mr. Benitez said it may take “15 to 20 years” to meet the demand for housing.
Mr. Benitez heads the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development which adopted House Substitute Resolution No. 1458 declaring a housing crisis.
The demand between 2016 and 2020 was 6.7 million units, of which only 770,000 were constructed.
