Air pollution in Bassetlaw close to breaking health limit

Separate figures published by the NHS show an estimated 5.1 per cent of deaths among people aged 30 and over in Bassetlaw were associated with long-term exposure to PM2.5, up from 4.6 per cent the year before. The British Heart Foundation, which is campaigning for stricter limits on PM2.5 as part of the Government s Environment Bill which returns to Parliament this year, says the country faces “a public health emergency”. John Maingay, director of policy and influencing at the charity, said: Our toxic air is a public health emergency, and now is the time to take robust action to support everyone’s health as we look to recover from the pandemic.

Air pollution falls to lowest level in a decade on Isle of Wight | Isle of Wight County Press

Air pollution rates have fallen on the Isle of Wight. AIR pollution on the Isle of Wight has fallen to its lowest level in a decade, figures reveal. Climate campaigners say the improvement in air quality has been helped by continuing investment in cycling and walking as well as the transition to zero-emission cars with new petrol cars to be banned from sale by 2030. Yet there are still areas across the UK where toxic pollution has led to health charities calling on the Government to impose stricter limits on fine particles in the air (PM2.5), which come mainly from the burning of oil, gas and diesel.

Dead swan left in unsealed bag on Ulverston Canal

A DEAD swan has been left lying in a bag at the side of Ulverston Canal. With the bird believed to have died from suspected avian flu on Wednesday, it has raised questions as to why it has not been removed by the relevant authorities. One resident believes the dead swan is now posing a risk to the community. They said: “If the swan was found dead on Wednesday then why is its body still on the side of the canal in an unsealed bag? “Surely when we are in the middle of a pandemic supposedly caused by the spread of a virus from animal to human, and given previous issues with bird flu and the fear that caused, then is it not irresponsible for Defra or the RSPCA or whoever is responsible to have left a swan that they suspect may have died from bird flu like this?

Braintree among most polluted places in UK, figures reveal

Braintree is among the most polluted areas in the UK, with residents exposed to levels above the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), figures reveal. Health campaigners say toxic air quality in the UK is a national emergency and the Government must impose stricter limits on fine particles in the air (PM2.5), which come mainly from the burning of oil, gas and diesel. Figures from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs show the average concentration of PM2.5 pollution particles in Braintree was 10.1 micrograms per cubic metre in 2019 – below the UK limit of 25, but above the WHO guideline limit of 10.
