Lansing Metro Detroit businessman Kevin Rinke, a Republican, is planning an initial investment of $10 million in his potential campaign for governor, an adviser said Monday, the day candidates already in the race had to file their first fundraising disclosures.
Rinke of Bloomfield Township, whose family has owned and operated auto dealerships in the state, has previously said he s seriously considering running for governor. His ability to self-fund his campaign could give him an advantage over the current field of GOP competitors and the chance to immediately cut into the large fundraising lead of incumbent Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Michigan s last Republican governor, Rick Snyder, used about $6 million of his own wealth to boost his campaign in the 2010 primary.

If James Craig does run against Gretchen Whitmer in 2022, his campaign is already off to a bad start, consultants say.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig has been hinting at running for governor of Michigan since the announcement of his retirement. Many Michiganders, especially Detroit residents, have mixed feelings about the idea of his candidacy after he made his Republican views clear. Several government officials, including Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Rep. Brenda Lawrence, have already announced their plans to stand with Gov. Whitmer if she seeks re-election in 2022.

DETROIT â After 44 years in law enforcement and more than seven leading the department in Michiganâs largest city, Detroit Police Chief James Craig announced his retirement Monday, while rumors swirled about a potential run for governor in his near future.
When asked about campaign rumors during a press conference, Craig said he has ânot made that decision,â but added, âIâm not ruling it out.â
The state GOP has been seeking a top-tier candidate with strong name-recognition and wider appeal to challenge Governor Whitmer in the 2022 election. Craigâs name has been floated around as a potential Republican candidate.
