The Russians are Coming!” but there is nothing funny about conspiratorial ravings from the Twitterverse that Chinese troops massed along the border with Maine were schwacked in an airstrike. Recent posts from a QAnon-backing Twitter handle with nearly 50,000 followers claimed that tens of thousands of Chinese troops had amassed along Maine’s border with Canada and that an F-16 fighter that crashed last week in Michigan was actually shot down presumably by the Chinese.
115th Fighter Wing resumes in-air operations following deadly jet crash

MADISON, Wis. In-air operations have resumed for the 115th Fighter Wing following a deadly F-16 crash.
The unit resumed operations on Tuesday after a temporary pause in response to last week’s crash.

The United States Air Force is leading the investigation into this crash. The investigation will be done in three phases.
Phase two is called the site investigation board and typically takes around 30 days. Investigators work to figure out what happened on the jet before and during the crash.
A small earthquake in Maine and a fatal F-16 crash in Michigan have given rise to a new and extreme conspiracy theory claiming that 50,000 Chinese troops have invaded the US.
There s nothing to that claim, and the proliferation of that conspiracy theory and others like it can actually threaten national security if they spread unchecked.
Every evolution of American politics gets the conspiracy theories it deserves.
During the administration of President George W. A section of the Hiawatha National Forest remains closed to visitors as the F-16 crash investigation continues.

DELTA COUNTY, MI – The U.S. Forest Service has closed roads, trails and forest land around the site of last week’s fatal F-16 Falcon crash in the Upper Peninsula.
Air Force Capt. Durwood “Hawk” Jones, 37, from Albuquerque, N.M., was killed when the plane went down during a training flight around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the U.P.’s Hiawatha National Forest. The plane had taken off from a Wisconsin Air National Guard base about 250 miles away.
