Livestock returns to Des Moines County Fairgrounds in 2021

As she waited on a water dish, Haley Steffener, 15, of Sperry, sprayed water into her hog Fred s mouth. Fred looked grateful for the relief. Steffener has been showing pigs at the fair since she was in fourth grade, a tradition that began with her aunt and uncle and carried on by her and her 11-year-old brother, Luke.

West Burlington schools installing solar panels to lower energy costs

The Hawk Eye WEST BURLINGTON The West Burlington School District soon will install solar paneling on its elementary and junior/senior high school buildings to help reduce energy costs. The project will allow Red Lion Renewables, a solar energy company based out of Norwalk, to assemble solar paneling on portions of roofs the elementary and high school, along with a solar panel canopy on the south side of the elementary school. The West Burlington School Board approved the plan during its July 19 meeting. Construction on the project is estimated to begin sometime in October. Red Lion Renewable will own and operate the solar equipment, with the district paying monthly fees for the electricity generated from the solar paneling. The district will not be responsible for any of the project s construction costs.
