(Max Becherer/The Advocate via AP) The Illinois Department of Public Health reported just over 1,700 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus on Monday, with 35 additional deaths attributed to the virus. According to the latest IDPH data, 1,747 cases have been reported over the last 24 hours. Those new cases bring the statewide total to 1,148,088 since the pandemic began. The 35 additional deaths bring the state to 19,668 deaths during the pandemic.

Tulane engineering students place first in design competition

  When four biomedical engineering students from Tulane University were chosen for an internship at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS) last summer, they were tasked with identifying an unmet clinical need – something that would not only save money for the agency but improve patient care and satisfaction.   They brainstormed multiple ideas, ultimately settling on a project they dubbed “Socket To Me” improving the costly and time-consuming process of manufacturing lower limb prosthetic sockets. With a grant from the National Institutes of Health, they spent the summer transforming their idea into an actual design a winning design. At the SLVHCS’s recent Performance Excellence Fair, the team of Kali Dancisak, Carly Harad, Ava Heller and Marjie Williams, won first place out of more than 40 department entries. Author: Kevin Dupuy Updated: 2:40 PM CST December 30, 2020 Louisiana reported its largest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases on Wednesday as the number of patients hospitalized across the state with the disease continues to rise. The Louisiana Department of Health reported 6,754 new cases of COVID-19 and 51 deaths. Hospitalizations rose by 28 for a total of 1,717 COVID-19 positive patients across the state. The new cases were from more than 52,000 new tests reported since Tuesday. The health department said that Wednesday’s update did not include a backlog of cases which makes it the highest number of daily cases reported in Louisiana since the pandemic began.
