Didi was about 20 months old then, a black Labrador who weighed 57 pounds, while Blake was an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church who was born with less than 30% vision in one eye and needed something more than a cane to navigate her way through life.
She found it with the dog she called “My Didi Girl.” She could go places now, confidently, with freedom and mobility. She could walk to the bank or take the bus to the store, her chin always out, Didi always by her side. Life had become something she never imagined before.
Didi slept on her bed and under the table in the office. She nudged her when she stayed too long on the computer. When it was too dark, she would grab onto Didi’s collar and the dog would lead her safely into the next room, and you should have seen them together in the chapel at the retirement facility where she was chaplain.

The Legislative Session is here, and Florida Influencers believe that come April 30, Gov.
Ron DeSantis will be the big winner.
Florida Politics asked the stateâs top consultants, lobbyists and political minds who stands to have the best Legislative Session and 43% picked the Governor. His believers include more than half of Republican Influencers, with just 27% of Democrats saying heâs their early favorite.
For the minority party, that honor goes to Senate President
Wilton Simpson, albeit by a narrow margin. Three in 10 Democrats say heâll be the clear winner when the hankie drops. More than half of independents believe the same while just 21% of Republicans agree.
Mills fulfills dream by opening bookstore on the Square
Jay Hinton
Glen Rose Reporter
GLEN ROSE To Janet Mills, her Rhythm & Co. Books on the corner of Elm and Barnard streets in the Downtown Square is more than just a bookstore.
“It s kind of like a book itself, with pages and chapters written by family and friends,” she said.
Several years ago, Mills, an avid reader and book collector, bounced the idea of opening a bookstore off of her husband Mark, who was supportive but cautious and wanted her to have a firm business plan. Those plans, however, were put on hold while Mark battled brain cancer. In 2017, he passed away, and she revisited the idea, but it took a couple of years to come to fruition.
Guide dog becomes a companion for a remade life
Elizabeth Djinis
Seeing them from afar, it isn’t obvious who is guiding whom.
Gary Ernneus walks with a leash and handle in hand, a black lab by his side. At first, their stride, nearly in step, seems casual. Gary directs the dog slowly but steadily, telling her to go “left” or “forward” and praising her with “Good girl,” holding his hand out to give her treats when she’s done something right.
But look closer, and the dog has a greater purpose. Her harness has a sign: “Don’t pet me. I’m working.” Her eyes have a certain determination in them, focused on the task at hand. When the sidewalk comes to an end, the dog stops at the edge of the curb, and Gary stops, too.
