Owatonna High School held a National Signing Day celebration to recognize 18 student-athletes that have committed to play sports while attending college. It is a cross-section of sports, educational interests and levels of college. Signings represent NCAA Divisions I, II and III, plus NAIA Division II and National Junior College level.
Wednesday was a day for smiles and congratulatory messages. The work of balancing college life, college courses and college athletics will come later. Several other OHS student-athletes are expected to join their classmates but hadn t made a final decision yet.
Several students I spoke with said picking a college or university for their desired field of study was first priority. Some reached out to coaches at their schools of interest. In some cases coaches reached out to them through a variety of ways. Some students may have had a campus visit, but not all, due to the pandemic.

WORTHINGTON Two years and four months after starting her home-based floral design business, Lauren Weg has launched her brick and mortar store a full-service flower shop in a century-old downtown Worthington building.
Weg quietly opened the shop Thursday morning, weeks ahead of one of the busiest holidays for florists Valentine’s Day. Her dad, intent on being her first customer, called in an order for a bouquet, which she created for her grandmother.
The shop, named Seed & Stem 12:27, references the Bible verse Luke 12:27, Consider how the wildflowers grow.

TRACY He was approachable and a good listener but sometimes, Jim Vickerman could also be a forceful advocate for causes he believed in, especially when they affected farms and rural communities.
“Sen. Vickerman was very much an advocate for rural Minnesota,” said former Minnesota Sen. Dennis Frederickson, who served alongside Vickerman in the state Senate.
Vickerman, a Tracy area farmer and a former Minnesota state legislator with 24 years of service, died Tuesday. He was 89.
Vickerman always treated others with kindness and respect, said Marty Seifert, a former Minnesota state representative who served in the Legislature with Vickerman for 14 years. Although they served in different parts of the Legislature and were members of different political parties, it was good to have Vickerman’s knowledge and seniority, Seifert said.
