We faced pain and sadness in 2020 – but resilience shone through

The cover a special supplement produced by the Star in the December 17 edition OVER the past few weeks we ve been looking back on 2020 – a year that we will never forget.a year that changed our lives. We’ve been selecting some of the images and stories that reflect this unprecedented year – and show how our community has responded to it. Many of the features were included in a print publication inside the Star (December 17 edition), which was supported by St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and includes their reflections on the battle they have endured since March. We are very grateful for their contribution and I’m sure Star readers will join us in praising the dedication of these NHS heroes who have been on the frontline in the fight against coronavirus.

2020: A timeline of how the Covid-19 crisis rocked St Helens

That was the day when news of a confirmed case of Covid-19 in St Helens broke. Rumours had swirled of people catching coronavirus prior to that of course, but March 13 was the day for the record books. On that occasion, St Anne’s Catholic Primary School in Sutton closed its nursery and reception after a parent tested positive for Covid-19. Less than a week later, on March 18, the government announced the closure of all schools until further notice. And on March 23, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on national television that the country would be going into lockdown, with the public told to stay home.

St Helens could go back to Tier 3 as Covid infections soar across the region ST HELENS could be plunged back into Tier 3 restrictions this week as infection rates continue to rise across the region. Since the last national lockdown ended on December 2, the Liverpool City Region, which St Helens is a part of, has been under Tier 2 restrictions. Prior to this, the region had been in Tier 3, placing the region on ‘very high alert’. The next review is due to be completed by December 30, with an announcement to be made in due course. A host of areas are expected to move into Tier 4, which was created by the government in response to a new highly infectious strain of the virus.
