MORE than 20,000 people across St Helens have now had their second jabs of the coronavirus vaccine – with more than 100,000 having had their first dose. Take-up of the vaccine in the UK has been exceptionally strong; five out of six people in the first nine priority groups have already chosen to take up the offer. In a significant milestone, St Helens Borough care sector has one of the highest uptakes of the vaccine in the North West, so far 95 per cent of care home residents and 88 per cent of care home staff have received the jab. Additionally, 90 per cent of staff at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust which run Whiston and St Helens Hospitals have now had their vaccine.

Merseyside’s COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Centre has re-opened its appointment booking line following last week s announcement that anyone over the age of 45 is now eligible for the vaccine.
The Covid rates for St Helens remain stable ST HELENS and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was caring for seven coronavirus patients in hospital as of last week, official figures show. NHS England data shows the number of people being treated in hospital for Covid-19 by 8am on April 13 was down from 19 on the same day the previous week, underlining the improve picture. The number of beds across Whiston, St Helens and Newton Hospitals occupied by people who tested positive for Covid-19 decreased by 83 per cent in the last four weeks – 28 days ago, there were 41. The figures also show that four new Covid patients were admitted to hospital in St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the week to April 11. This was down from 11 in the previous seven days.

The sad news came after nearly a month without any patients passing away with the virus at the hospitals. NHS England figures state that since the start of the pandemic 710 people had died in hospital at Whiston, St Helens and Newton hospitals of as Tuesday, April 13. It means there have been two deaths in the past week. Previously, there no been no new deaths recorded since mid-March.
