John “Jack” Egan transitioned to the heavens last Friday night. He was 86 years young, vibrant, inspiring. He was a shining light to me, my family, and all of Puerto Rican, Latino, Jersey City when I was growing up.
A (former) priest, pacifist, activist, author, humanist, Jack Egan had to constantly deal with his name in the community he served so well from St. Boniface Church. “It’s OK, but I’m no longer a priest,” he would have to repeat thousands of times to Latino parishioners who would say, “I will always call you ‘Padre Juan.’”

There’s an immediate need to expand shelter space and open more heated buildings, such as community centres. In mid-winter in Winnipeg, a warm place is not a luxury. It’s essential.
Never has Winnipeg’s homelessness issue been so visible literally as it has been during this pandemic winter. The COVID-19 crisis is why an unprecedented number of homeless people are crowded into the glass-walled shelters, putting this city’s serious social problems on display for all passers
THE LOCATION
The Royal Mail stands on the main street of Dunkeld, a small town in western Victoria at the southern foot of the Grampians mountain range (known as Gariwerd to the local Indigenous people). This makes for impressive views, as well as making it a convenient base to visit shops and cafes within the township. The hotel is also a handy starting point for hikes or drives into the national park.

THE SPACE
Having started as a 19th century pub, the hotel is an interesting mix of architecture: the bar end of its main building is contained within the original stone walls, while the restaurant end sits within a modern structure. The hotel rooms are in separate blocks, surrounded by stands of native plants. The long-term plan is to relocate guest parking to one side of this area, so the space between buildings can be a continuous garden. In the middle is a compact swimming pool.
