Superintendent Theresa Axford has chosen Marissa Means as the new coordinator of comprehensive health and STEM, stepping into the role vacated by Melissa Alsobrooks, who moved to the assistant principal position at Key West High School.
As the coordinator, Means will oversee the health initiatives that the state has mandated, serve as the district science curriculum support contact, and continue with the major environmental and STEM projects the district is currently promoting.
âMarissa Means brings much experience to this role of Coordinator of Comprehensive Health and STEM,â stated Axford. âWe have many new state mandates in the area of Health Education, and I am sure she can lead us toward accomplishing them.â

Monroe County School District and computer science students earned more than 500 industry certifications during the 2020-2021 school year.
Students earned $56,000 in Monroe Computes prizes during the regular school year, with more expected during the districtâs many summer programs. This is an impressive showing by our students in such a difficult year, Monroe County Schools Superintendent Theresa Axford said.
The students are highly motivated, thanks in large part to the incentives provided by Monroe Computes, which rewards students with cash prizes for earning certifications.
The prizes range from $50 to $500 depending on the difficulty of the certification exam.
With the retirement of Blake Fry from his current position as principal of Coral Shores High School, and Key Largo School Principal Laura Lietaert taking his place, the search is on for a new principal to take over Lietaertâs old job.
The position was posted on job boards the day after it was announced at the end of May that Lietaert would be moving to Coral Shores. A spokesperson for the Monroe County School District said the position was still open, that there would be an interview process with a selection committee once a few applicants are found, then a few finalists from that pool will interview with Schools Superintendent Theresa Axford.
