Allegheny County elections officials on Friday urged voters who want to vote by mail in the May 18 primary to do so as soon as possible so their applications can be received and processed by Tuesday’s 5 p.m. deadline.

Allegheny County Courthouse With nearly 40 candidates running for nine open seats on the Common Pleas Court of Allegheny County, this election cycle offers a paramount opportunity to remake the county’s criminal justice system. Common Pleas Judges are responsible for overseeing trials for criminal, civil, and family cases and delivering sentencing. They can also be a part of doling out, or withholding, cash bail. Their discretion can reform the court.
Pittsburgh City Paper has chosen to highlight four different categories of endorsements and/or rankings for this year’s judicial candidates: legal, political, reform, and LGBTQ. The legal rankings come from the Allegheny County Bar Association and have four different results: highly recommended, recommended, not recommended at this time (which means candidates could be recommended later, but aren’t currently), and unqualified.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf. (PA Governor s Office)
HARRISBURG, PA The state House Government Committee has approved a bill that would change the state constitution and limit a governor s authority under certain circumstances. The full House likely will now debate the measure.
Rep. Jason Ortitay of South Fayette in southwestern Pennsylvania sponsored the legislation, which would take away the responsibility of writing and advertising a proposed constitutional amendment from the governor s Department of State and transfer it to the House chief clerk or Senate secretary.
Ortitay cited the state department s error earlier this year by failing to advertise a constitutional amendment that sought to open a two-year window for child sex abuse survivors to file civil suits against their abuser.
