Family Members of Inmates Who Died Allege Negligence at Johnston County Jail
One day in mid-January, Lyric Murray, 19, wrote down the name of another inmateâs mother while they both were locked up at the Johnston County Jail in Smithfield. The other inmate, Eric Cruz, 23, was being held in a cell across from Murrayâs.
Murray says he called his mother, Mele Brock, and gave her Cruzâs motherâs name.Â
âI told my mom, âI think heâs gonna die,ââ Murray tells the

DAVIESS CO., Ky. (WFIE) - Daviess County Detention Center is limiting visitors to the facility after another COVID-19 outbreak where 51 inmates and five staff members have tested positive.
The detention center had another outbreak back in December.
Officials are not entirely sure how this current outbreak started, but believe a staff member or new inmate could have brought it into the building.
“We’re just on limited movement to keep the spread from going into other housing units. Behind me in this building there’s over 100 cells. I would say roughly 12 of them are affected by this with the outbreak,” said Art Maglinger, the jailer.
Nine months into the coronavirus pandemic, an outbreak has occurred at the Warren County Regional Jail, with 101 inmates who have tested positive for COVID-19 and eight staffers, including Warren County Jailer Stephen Harmon, also testing positive.
The outbreak began about a week ago, and in response the jail has suspended movement within the facility except for emergencies and necessary virtual court appearances.
All non-essential functions have been suspended to allow jail staff to be involved in monitoring inmates and assisting medical staff in the evaluation and care of inmates.
In a news release Tuesday, Harmon said that in addition to the 101 positive tests among inmates, another 92 inmates have tests pending and additional tests are being performed daily.
