Their View: Keep nuclear plants operating in Illinois

Two Illinois nuclear power plants, Byron and Dresden, are due for premature closure this year. The two plants are licensed to operate for another 10 to 20 years, but have been slated for closure in September and November. Illinois lawmakers must act, and act now, to prevent this.
Last year, Gov. Pritzker advocated for the passage of a comprehensive energy bill to put Illinois on a course for a carbon-free power industry, and importantly, 90% of Illinois’ clean energy is currently produced by nuclear power. Byron alone generates enough power for more than 2.3 million homes.

WACO, Texas (Jan. 27, 2021) – In the fight against human trafficking, law enforcement officers are forced to navigate many technological challenges to break up illicit networks and rescue individuals caught up in human trade. A Baylor University professor and a former student, now a faculty member at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), are working to address many of those challenges with the help of a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

EDWARDSVILLE, Illinois (KMOV) A Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville student from Chicago died after being shot near campus.
Illinois State Police officials said the 26-year-old student was shot while driving on the ramp from Rte. 157 to Interstate 270 on Jan. 14. According to several of Moneer Damra’s friends, he had just been picked up from the airport and was headed back to campus when he was shot. The driver was able to get back to campus and call 911, while paramedics worked to keep Damra alive.
Damra was then rushed to a hospital for treatment. On Jan. 27, SIUE announced that the nursing student had died of his injuries.

EDWARDSVILLE U.S. News & World Report ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s School of Nursing (SON) among the top 50 in its 2021 Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs list released Tuesday, Jan. 26. The School is ranked 49th among 194 schools nationally and among the top four in Illinois.
The School of Nursing’s online graduate degree programs include a family nurse practitioner doctor of nursing practice (DNP), post-master’s DNP, and master’s degrees in health care nursing administration (HCNA) and nurse educator (NE).
