Collaborative program offers Zoom activities for regional youth

MACOMB A Western Illinois University Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration professor and a department graduate student have helped create a virtual field trip program through the Regional Office of Education to give young people some fun activities during COVID-19.
Winter Wanderings was created through the McDonough County Youth Task Force, with help from RPTA Instructor Jullie Eggleston and RPTA graduate student Rok Locksley, of Takoma Park, MD. The task force is chaired by RPTA Assistant Professor Megan Owens.
The collaborative field trip project is designed to engage children from around the region in Zoom-based exploring. The programs are free and sessions are available for elementary, middle school and high school students. Programming runs through May and a wide variety of session options are available.

Earl Dean Browning, age 95, of Godfrey, Illinois, passed away at home in the early morning hours of Monday, February 22, 2021.
Dean was born January 21, 1926, in Annawan, Illinois, to Earl Franklin and Velma Lucille (Moon) Browning. A star basketball player, he graduated from Annawan High School in 1944. Following high school, Dean served his country from 1944 to 1946 in the United States Army rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant (Platoon Leader) in the Anti-tank Company 35
th Infantry Regiment 25
th Division, Tropic Lightning. Dean was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry for serving 165 consecutive days in frontline combat service including the invasion of Luzon, the taking of the Balete Pass and the capture of Santa Fe. He was also awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was among the first Occupation Troops in Japan.

Makenzie Silvey has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Makenzie Silvey led the Salukis to a sweep of the Indiana State Sycamores over the weekend. The senior from Glen Carbon, Ill. had her way with the Sycamores all weekend, as she averaged a robust 23.5 points on 55.6-percent (20-of-36) shooting, which including 50-percent (7-of-14) from behind the arc. The two-time All-MVC selection also added 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 32.1 minutes per game.
Silvey went for a game-high 26 points on an efficient 11-of-18 from the field and added six boards, six assists and steal in 29 minutes of work in SIU’s 84-69 win on Friday. She followed with 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting in Southern’s 76-52 win on Saturday.
