Positive portrayals: Black gun owners from Bell, Coryell featured in Post photo essay

A Temple couple embraced as they were photographed in their driveway, each holding a gun. The portrait of Kenneth and Tylissa Frazier by Killeen photojournalist Christian K. Lee was among several featured in a photo essay published Sunday in The Washington Post Magazine. The article — titled “Armed Doesn’t Mean Dangerous” — included portraits of black gun owners from Temple, Killeen, Copperas Cove and Fort Hood. The photos and text by Lee, a 30-year-old first lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood, are intended to show positive images of black gun owners, he said. Gun ownership “is not a black or white issue,” Lee said, “it’s an American right.”

Illinois lawmakers debate redistricting data from 2020 census

The significant delay of the release of 2020 census data as well as politics surrounding the count have created problems for lawmakers deciding how to draw Illinois’ legislative maps. Normally, there is little debate over which data to use. The census data is available and used by lawmakers to understand how the state’s population has changed over the last decade. This year, factors including the pandemic and policies by the Trump administration, have delayed the release of the full census data until late summer. It has left lawmakers quarreling over whether they should use the census data or the American Community Survey data.

Centralia Woman Sentenced for Defrauding the State of Illinois

A former administrator for the Illinois Secretary of State has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for fraud.     58-year-old Candace Wanzo of Centralia worked for the Department of Vehicle Services and was responsible for operation of the Public Service Center in Springfield.   She pleaded guilty last fall to stealing title and registration fees and sales tax payments – and replacing the funds with money paid by other vehicle owners.   Federal prosecutors say she misapplied 300-thousand dollars.     Wanzo has also been ordered to pay restitution. Before being hired by Jesse White’s office in 1999,  Wanzo pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly a quarter of a million dollars from Southern Illinois University while working for the bursar’s office.
