Activists push to protect Arizona public lands, undo Trump changes

GILA BEND Before committing to the motion, Zion White cautiously checks where he plans to place his hand, trying to avoid the Native American petroglyphs he’s there to document. “When I see these petroglyphs, I think about how someone spent the time to peck out that image, put it on this rock and tell our history,” said White, a member of the Fort Yuma Quechan Tribe. “Now, I’m here doing the exact same thing to preserve our history.” With his hand carefully positioned, White steadies himself and silently shimmies down the side of a boulder. “Try not to wake the bees,” he whispers, pointing at a pile of honeycombs littering a crack in the cliff face. “Last time, we couldn’t finish documenting this site because of them.”

With this action, the groups seek to defend the leasing pause against two lawsuits filed by Wyoming and the Western Energy Alliance. The coalition argues this is the legal and necessary first step to a long-overdue review of the federal oil and gas leasing and permitting program.

April 22 marks the 51st anniversary of Earth Day, and WSU is celebrating its continued sustainability efforts. Sustainability Practices and Research Center (SPARC) Director Alice Mulder said the actions of governments, businesses and communities around the world to keep people safe in response to COVID-19 have provided a number of valuable lessons for addressing climate change. “Importantly, we have learned we can adapt quickly when we are informed by science,” Mulder said. “We can recognize a pressing collective challenge and put our minds to it, with individuals benefiting themselves and the larger community. During the year, we both reduced the spread of the virus and saw reduced emissions and improved air quality as many people worked remotely.”
