A tribute to Ebenezer Baptist Church: From Martin Luther King to Raphael Warnock

© Getty Images A measure of a civilized society is the institutions it builds to preserve and continue a legacy. For African Americans, one such monument is the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, founded 135 years ago by people recovering from slavery. As we observe Martin Luther King Day, people at home and abroad cheer the arrival of political change in Georgia and in America even as they condemn the violence that threatens our democratic institutions. In the midst of chaos, the Rev. Raphael Warnock Warnock is the fifth minister of the church, having taken on the role in 2005. More importantly, he is the first to achieve the full measure of political redemption demanded in the long struggle for Black freedom. His election made real the dream of state empowerment championed by his most renowned predecessor, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Playing on the predominantly white Hobbs High School basketball team just as the modern civil rights era was beginning, Becknell and the other Black players were not allowed to stay in the same hotels as the white players during away games.

Willson Center receives $1M Mellon Foundation grant January 13, 2021 Award funds community engagement in Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor The University of Georgia’s Willson Center for Humanities and Arts has received a $1 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to partner with Penn Center, one of the nation’s most important institutions of African American culture. The partnership will support education and sharing among communities in the Sea Islands region of the Southeastern United States and students from UGA and its partner institutions. Located on St. Helena Island, one of the South Carolina Sea Islands, Penn Center is a nonprofit organization committed to African American education, community development and social justice. It also serves as a gathering place for meetings, educational institutions and planning activities within the Sea Island Gullah Geechee communities.
