School consolidation plans presented to public

Christian County Public Schools has started preparing the public for a potential vote by the school board that could result in the consolidation of Hopkinsville and Christian County high schools. The first of three public forums was held on Monday at the Christian County Middle School Performing Arts Center. Subsequent forums are scheduled for Aug. 2 at Crofton Elementary School and Aug. 12 at South Christian Elementary School. Both events will start at 6 p.m. and be held in the respective school gyms. Superintendent Chris Bentzel and other Christian County central office administrators laid out the history of the facilities that has led to this moment where it looks like consolidation is the best option. Bentzel said that both high school buildings are old and in need of replacement or major renovations.

School Board Hears Learning Recovery Plan for Students

Addison added the Summer Learning Institute will be from June 7 through July 1, Monday thru Thursday, each week with students attending from 9:00 until 2:00 with meals and transportation provided. She says it’s open for students PreK-12 th grade. During the finance update, Finance Director Jessica Darnell said the district’s revenues and expenses were both down compared to the same time last year. She said the revenue was down about $536,000 due to a change in the SEEK with overall expenses down about $1.6 million.

In-person learning will continue as planned in the schools, with the majority of students back in the buildings, and around 600 students still in the Virtual Learning Academy. Director of Instruction Jessica Addison says so far, schools have been focusing on aggressive intervention to make up lost work and see where students need further education to catch them up. She says they are looking to start a summer learning institute to help students who have fallen behind or even who just want the extra studies.
