After two failed court appearances, it is obvious that more careful consideration by the board is required prior to simply accepting decisions made by seemingly incompetent upper management. All along I have felt that the decision to demote was based on some internal bias towards Mr. Oberg by certain members of the upper management team. Unfortunately, individuals at the upper level of management do not seem to like having their decisions questioned. The arrogance shown by the board in continuing to try to justify a terrible decision has us where we are today. Perhaps with the school year coming to a close, it is time the board made accountable those individuals involved in the original decision making.
The school division is data driven by its own admission and Goal 3 describes to the effect they use information gathered to measure, monitor and report continuous improvement within the student body, and by design, the teams that deliver those educational standards. Superintendents Gord Husband, Kevin Hengen and Shelley Sargent were joined by director of education Lynn Little to deliver a package of system Goal 3 information to board members on Feb. 10. While facilities were not the main objective of the report, Dobson added a few informational items of interest dealing with damages inflicted on Cornerstone schools as a result of the high winds that arrived with the severe winter storm on January 13. One notable damage report indicated that the Gladmar School roof was nearly completely destroyed by the high winds and some brickwork was damaged. Other schools suffered varying degrees of damage, including the Weyburn Comprehensive School that also suffered roof damages. He said roof anchors kept the WCS roof in place, but damages were still significant. Other facilities like the Estevan Comprehensive School and the new Legacy Park Elementary School in Weyburn suffered more minor damages.
In an email interview, Dobson was inspired to put her name forward as the new principal due to the “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this new school presents and the endless possibilities that lie ahead for Legacy Park. I feel very privileged to be a part of it.” Dobson is the current principal of Haig School and has been an administrator in Southeast Cornerstone for 17 years. She received her Masters in Educational Administration in 2017 and was the recipient of Canada’s Outstanding Principal award in 2014. “The support from Haig School means more than words can say, not only during this time, but throughout my 20 years at Haig. I have been incredibly lucky to be part of such an amazing staff and school community,” she said.
