Iran released a tanker stuck in the Persian Gulf after three months. This was announced by the government in Seoul. The captain of the chemical and oil products ship “Hankuk Chemi” was released after three months, said the South Korean Foreign Ministry: “The ship departed safely today.”
The captain and the other crew members are doing well. The incident had briefly led to a diplomatic crisis between the Asian countries, which were actually good friends.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) arrested the tanker earlier this year – it was accused of marine pollution. The “Hankuk Chemi” allegedly loaded 7200 tons of ethanol. According to the IRGC, the ship was directed to the port city of Bandar Abbas, where the judicial authorities should deal with the alleged violations. The incident was reminiscent of the arrest of the British oil tanker “Stena Impero” in 2019.
