Advocates give flooding solution proposals to counter possible downtown seawall Heath Ellison © Provided by WCIV Charleston The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) and the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League (SCCCL) are proposing measures to combat flooding, at the same time the city of Charleston is considering a large seawall around the peninsula. The plan suggests using surrounding landscapes, such as natural breakwaters that can chop up storm surges and act as habitats for wildlife. In addition, it suggests adapting streets and sidewalks to filter storm water through rain gardens and water runoff captures containing plant life. These proposals are not far off from suggestions seen in the Dutch Dialogues, which was released in 2019. The Dutch Dialogues recommended the city use its natural resources as a buffer to halt flooding and to be careful where it builds in the future.
