Thousands of people from across the country are in Dallas this week for the Southern Baptist Convention’s Annual Meeting. This year’s event comes as the church faces sharp criticism both internally and externally over the role of women in their organization and how some church leaders have handled cases of alleged domestic abuse.

The Southern Baptist Convention’s first and only black president, Fred Luter, has nominated Alabama Pastor Ed Litton to become the denomination’s next president, setting up a brewing ideological clash on race with prominent candidate and seminary head Albert Mohler.
“I have known Ed Litton for over 20 years. Our relationship started when we preached for each other as part of the SBC Racial Reconciliation Sunday during the month of February,” Luter told the Baptist Press.
“From there, our relationship developed to more than just colleagues to bring races together. We both shared the hope of drawing people closer to a relationship with Jesus Christ and then growing disciples for Christ. In both of our churches, our focus has been the same all of these years.

Texas Baptist Minister, a Lifelong Republican, Loses License After Endorsing Biden

A Southern Baptist minister was told his license to the gospel ministry would not be renewed at a Texas church following a Facebook post endorsing Joe Biden for president in September, according to the Baptist Standard.
David Bumgardner, a 21-year-old Fort Worth student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary s Scarborough College, completed a year-long pastoral internship at Faith Memorial Baptist Church in Archer City, Texas. The congregation, which is aligned with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, licensed Bumgardner to the gospel ministry on July 19, a private agreement between himself and the church pastor, Avery Sprey.
