Christian supporters of President Donald Trump were among the thousands who descended on Washington DC last week. Their presence highlights a divide in American Christianity.
Before the march on the US Capitol began last Wednesday, some knelt to pray.
Thousands had come to the seat of power for a Save America rally organised to challenge the election result. Mr Trump addressed the crowd near the White House, calling on them to march on Congress where politicians were gathered to certify President-elect Joe Biden s win.
The crowd was littered with religious imagery. Jesus 2020 campaign flags flapped in the wind alongside Trump banners and the stars and stripes of the US flag.

Dr. George Allen “Bub” Haile of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 11, 2021 at the age of 86 after a battle with cancer.
Born January 17, 1934, in the small mill town of Ansley, LA, he grew up in nearby Jonesboro as the youngest of eight children. A lifelong learner, his educational journey began with a basketball scholarship to Louisiana Tech and continued on to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, earning an additional Bachelors and a Master’s in Theology.
He later earned a Master’s in counseling at Louisiana Tech and a Doctorate in Ministry at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.George ministered throughout Louisiana for over 40 years. He served as pastor of several churches until 1962 when he became the Director of the Baptist Student Union at Louisiana Tech where he mentored many students in their Christian faith for eight years. A Georgia pastor has thrown his hat into the ring to be considered for president of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Pastor Mike Stone is immediate past chairman of the SBC Executive Committee and senior pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Blackshear, Georgia. He is also on the steering committee of the recently formed Conservative Baptist Network, an affiliation of churches concerned with a perceived leftward drift in the Southern Baptist denomination.
Biblical apologist Dr. Alex McFarland says it s appropriate for a pastor to head the SBC.
