SD House committee votes to stop impeachment process until after Hyde County criminal proceedings are complete

HR7001F will next go to the House floor. As a House Resolution, no Senate action is required. On February 25, 2021, the Sixth Circuit Court issued an order precluding disclosure of criminal investigation information after Governor Kristi Noem’s release of evidence regarding the criminal charges in The State of South Dakota V. Jason Ravnsborg. The order stops Noem and all members of state government from releasing any evidence relating to the criminal case connected to the September death of Joseph Boever in Hyde County. House Majority Leader Kent Peterson (Salem, District 19) says he thinks it’s clear Judge Brown’s intent was to honor the right to due process and a premature public proceeding might hinder that.

(Dakota News Now) - UPDATE, 2:25 p.m.: A bill that would require birth certificates to reflect biological sex in South Dakota has been revived in the legislature. The House of Representatives on Tuesday moved to “smoke out” House Bill 1076 after the measure was defeated by a legislative committee earlier that day. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Fred Deutsch of Florence, moved to invoke legislative rule 7-7 on the floor of the House Tuesday afternoon. This rule - also known as a “smoke out” - requires a committee to deliver a bill to the full body of the chamber if at least one-third of the chamber’s members support the move. Deutch’s action got the required votes, thus reviving the bill.
