Southern Downs dog breeder pushes for major expansion

A Southern Downs corgi breeder is preparing for a huge expansion with plans to boost their puppy capacity by up to 400 per cent. Landowners Desmond and Judith Waugh lodged an application with Southern Downs Regional Council on Monday to build upon their corgi breeding program at 130 Breens Rd, Eukey. The 40.24ha property has current approval to house up to five Welsh corgis at any time, with the new application pushing to raise their total capacity to 20. With the dogs bred at the Eukey property to be sold online to interstate or overseas buyers, 15 of the animals would live in the kennel with room for up to another five awaiting final vaccinations before being shipped.

Government pumps millions into Southern Downs water security

JOINT STATEMENT The Palaszczuk Government is investing millions to keep taps flowing in the Southern Downs with the Premier today announcing a $20 million drought resilience package for the region. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said while recent rain had provided much needed relief to the Southern Downs region including good inflows into Leslie, Connolly and Storm King Dams, it hasn’t been enough to solve long-term water security issues for the Southern Downs. “In late 2019, in response to low supplies in the region’s dams, my Government committed to plan for a new pipeline from Toowoomba to Warwick,” the Premier said. “This commitment was in addition to $15 million in emergency assistance provided to cart water into Stanthorpe.

New controversy over $4M Maryvale railway reserve

Councillors voted unanimously to receive the petition and refer it to the director of infrastructure services for further investigation. Both Mayor Vic Pennisi and councillor Sheryl Windle commended the Maryvale community on their united efforts, but said it was clear after a recent council workshop that many of the small town’s residents were confused about the development’s trajectory. “We’ve developed an (Urban Development Framework) in Maryvale and quite a lot of that has been achieved …(but) we need to develop some kind of action plan in relation to Maryvale so we’re not doing this all higgledy-piggledy,” Cr Pennisi said.

Flood damage to skyrocket past disaster trigger point

Ms McKenzie said the additional damage would push back the completion of 2020 flood repairs to March next year, with it unlikely the roads damaged in this year s flood event would be repaired before 2023. The report tabled at the council meeting stated that even though assessment of the total damage was ongoing, it was clear the disaster trigger point of $233,000 (would) be exceeded . An SDRC spokeswoman said more than 300 roads had already been identified as flood-damaged to some extent, with emergency repairs to continue for 90 days from the end of the weather event. (The) council has an extensive list of impacted areas from customer contacts and has multiple officers undertaking network inspections to prioritise the response and capture the necessary information for claiming the costs associated with the event, the spokeswoman said.
