New funding scheme is not impacting on SIT s Zero Fees

New certificate courses include cleaning, education support and care, information technology essentials and information technology. However, SIT acting chief executive Maree Howden said the TTAF courses did not have a negative impact on its own Zero Fees scheme. It had a very focused approach to attracting students under TTAF, with additional government funding and marketing, Howden said. Financially SIT benefits as student tuition was covered under the scheme in which Zero Fees did not, she said. SIT’s Zero Fees scheme still supported courses, which were not part of the TTAF scheme, Howden said. Previously when the Government introduced first year free tertiary education, the institution was concerned about losing its competitive advantage.

International students to start returning to SIT to complete studies

SIT had expected 2000 international students last year but Covid-19 disrupted that. Abeysinghe said about 300 to 400 international students had stayed in New Zealand, and SIT expected they would return to study this year . Although 11 students might seem like a small number, the announcement was a positive sign and helped let other countries know it was open for business, Abeysinghe said. The International Education Strategy for Southland forecasted international student enrolments to grow to more than 2800 by 2025, that was unlikely to be achieved now, she said. An Education New Zealand report for 2017/2018 says international students at polytechnics, schools and private training establishments generate $55 million through tuition and living costs, creating 540 jobs in the Southland region.

Bibhas Biswas: Home is not where you come from, it is where you make it

Bibhas Biswas checks out the plants in his urban farm as part of his business called Crunchy. The Southern Institute of Technology - and in particular a scholarship named after former New Zealand cricketer and former Indian coach John Wright - provided the lure for Biswas to move from Kolkata, a city of about 14 million, to Invercargill, which boosts about 55,000 people. The Government has moved this week to allow 1000 international tertiary students into New Zealand who were caught offshore when border restrictions began because of Covid-19. As part of the 1000, 11 international SIT students will be able to return. Biswas himself provides an example of the positive impact international students can have on communities, both in the short and long-term.
