Southern Institute of Technology graduate Jerry Westaway has won an award for his short film ‘The Green Revolution’.
When film graduate Jerry Westaway began documenting a climate protest at the bottom of the world, he never dreamed it would win him an award. But the former Southern Institute of Technology student said he had a sense he was dealing with something historic and needed to capture it. Westaway’s short documentary
The Green Revolution tells the story of the School Strike for Climate in Invercargill in September 2019, through the eyes of organiser Ash Putt-Falows, with comment from local environmental officials.
It also gave 23 students from the Southern Institute of Technology and Southland Boys’ High School the chance to experience a busy commercial kitchen while learning from top chefs. Flack, who had resettled in his hometown of Invercargill, said his culinary idols had taught him about the importance of cooking with locally sourced, seasonal food. “There’s a connection between the plate of food and what s happening around you,” he said, adding that campaigns like Savour the South encouraged people to get to know their local producers. The luncheon meant students could learn from five different chefs with different experiences and mindsets,” Flack said.

The Southern Institute of Technology Group (SIT) achieved
a net surplus of $1.064 million for the year ending 31
December 2020.
“This is very pleasing result for a
year of such change and uncertainty, due to Covid,” says
Board Chair, Alison Broad.
“It reflects the strong
base from which SIT operates. Our income and reserve levels
remain strong and that means we have options and can move
forward with confidence as we explore new
opportunities.”
SIT recorded revenue of $61.344
million for the year and expenditure of $60.28 million. It
has net assets of $135.715 million.
