‘Absolutely defeated’: Black nurses struggle with mental health support while battling Covid-19
Throughout Olivia Thompson’s 12-hour shift as a cardiac and Covid-19 nurse in Chandler, Arizona, she closely monitors the oxygen levels of several patients at a time and works with other medical specialists to heal them.
For some, no amount of care Thompson gives prevents them from being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.
“There were times where I was dreading going to work because of the unknown,” Thompson said. “Am I going to be a good nurse for my patients? Am I going to make a mistake?”

Music blared as friends sang and told tales Saturday in memory of a departed giant of Thibodaux s music scene.
Gary Clement, 71, a native of Thibodaux, spent over 50 years as a musician and songwriter, touring with famous musicians at notable locations such as the Apollo Theater in New York.
He remained engaged with the local music scene until his death Jan. 15 from complications of COVID-19.
Duncanville City Council recently announced Aretha R. Ferrell-Benavides as their new City Manager, with a start date of Feb. 22, 2021. Ferrell-Benavides is no stranger to the Best Southwest area, having previously served two years as City Manager for the City of Glenn Heights. Since July 2017, she has served as City Manager for Petersburg, VA., and is credited with helping pull that city back from financial collapse. After a $7.7 million deficit in 2016, city officials announced an $8 million fund balance by 2018, their largest in over a decade.

William Moore, a longtime faculty member and administrator at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, died on December 10. He was 79 years old.
Dr. Moore joined the chemistry faculty at Southern University in the late 1960s, and achieved the rank of full professor within five years. He established a strong undergraduate research program, which contributed to many of his students going on to obtain medical or doctoral degrees. Professor Moore became the first president of the faculty senate in 1973.
Dr. Moore left Southern Univerity in 1982 to serve as academic vice president, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, and director of Title III programs at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. In 1985, he was named academic vice president and chief academic officer at Texas Southern University in Houston.
