Outstanding students aim to help youth, communities in careers
For Freja Magnussen, her interest in the fields of social science began with a curiosity about criminals and psychology. She would watch crime dramas on TV, and it only developed her interest more.
Flash forward a few years, and Magnussen is working on a project involving statistics and crime and ready for wherever the field of criminal justice takes her. Magnussen, of Vallensbaek, Denmark, recently was named the Spring 2021 Outstanding Undergraduate Student for the University of Houston-Victoria School of Arts & Sciences. According to the UNCF report titled
HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, HBCUs have generated $923 million in total economic impact across the U.S. This includes not only direct spending by faculty, employees, various academic and sports programs, and students, but also the further effects of that spending. UNCF found that every dollar in initial spending generated an additional $1.39 in successive spending. The ripple effect continues to spread, helping to generate additional money for the communities and regions of the state where these universities reside.
Winter Haven s James Ammons feels revived at New Orleans school
Winter Haven native previously led Florida A&M
James Ammons took over temporary leadership of Southern University at New Orleans in tenuous circumstances.
Ammons’ appointment as interim chancellor in November 2019 came several months after an accrediting agency put the historically Black university on probation because of persistent financial problems. A few months after that, the COVID-19 pandemic struck the United States, forcing colleges and universities to quickly adopt alternatives to the traditional classroom model.
But Ammons, a Winter Haven native, navigated the school through those difficulties and was rewarded last month when the university’s board of supervisors installed him as permanent chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans.
