TAMPA, Fla (April 20, 2021) Chaperone protein imbalance can play a significant role in initiating toxic accumulation of tau in the aging brain - an early step in the development of Alzheimer s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders known as tauopathies, a new preclinical study by University of South Florida Health (USF Health) neuroscientists suggests.
In humans, misfolding of the protein tau leads to its toxic accumulation inside brain cells, the formation of these tau aggregates into hallmark neurofibrillary tangles, neuron death, and eventually symptoms of cognitive decline such as memory loss and diminished thinking skills.

Preterm births births before 37 weeks of pregnancy are medically labelled ‘idiopathic,’ when they arise from unexplained, spontaneous labor. Preterm births are linked to an array of illnesses and increased risk of death in infancy. Idiopathic preterm birth (iPTB) is linked to maternal depression and post-traumatic stress disorder but the exact molecular mechanism that links maternal stress to preterm birth has been unclear.
A new preclinical study conducted at the Morsani College of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of South Florida Health (USF Health), has uncovered a mechanism to help explain how psychological or physiological stress in pregnant women triggers iPTB.
So far, there’s been about 30 cases of COVID-19 among college students and staff living on campus at the four universities in the state college system. “Unlike what we’re seeing around the country, where there’s hundreds of cases at some of these universities we’ve been very fortunate at our four universities so far and I hope to continue that. Preterm birth is a leading cause of infant deaths and illness in the U.S. yet its underlying molecular causes remain largely unclear. About 40 to 50% of preterm births, defined as births before 37 weeks of pregnancy, are estimated to be "idiopathic," meaning they arise from unexplained or spontaneous labor.
