This goes against every inroad the farming industry has made recently. Catchment groups in our electorate have clearly demonstrated farmers can maintain strong production and improve environmental incomes without the kind of harsh restrictions that the Labour-Greens Government are moving to enforce. The fundamental problem at the heart of this issue is that the Government want to improve the environment but its own ministers and policymakers are unable to provide a framework that is practical, economical, outcomes-based and does not put an incredible mental strain on those working out on the land. Farmers who I’ve talked to, and there have been many hundreds since I became MP for Southland, want to achieve the same environmental outcomes as policy-makers.
