(ABC 6 News) - The Goodhue County Sheriff s office has identified the human remains found while responding to a fire on New Year s eve.
On January 21, the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased as Cory Lee Cassidy, 36, of Dodge Center. The cause of death is believed to be accidental carbon monoxide asphyxiation. The sheriff s office said there has never been any indications of foul play throughout the investigation.
Firefighters located Cassidy in a burnt vehicle parked outside a residence while responding to a structure fire in the 45000 block of Highway 56 Blvd in Holden Township.
Goodhue County Sheriff Still Investigating Fire Death
The Peterson house is nestled in woods to the north of the Country Club in Holden Township.
The Goodhue County Sheriff s Office news release says, Upon arrival, firefighters located human remains in a burnt vehicle parked outside of the residence. The Kenyon Fire Department was assisted by Wanamingo Fire Department in responding to the fire along with the Kenyon Police Department and Goodhue County Sheriff s Office.
The Goodhue County Sheriff s Office did not identify the exact address of the home or the homeowners. They did say the owners were accounted for.
I checked with a few people in Kenyon to confirm it was the Peterson house. I was told the vehicle did not belong to them or any of their family members. Barb and Jerry were in Arizona and have returned to Kenyon. All family members have been located.
The cause of the fire was still unknown. The homeowners and residents have been accounted for.

KENYON First responders found human remains in a burnt vehicle on New Year s Eve after responding to a structure fire.
The call for the fire went out at 6:14 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, in the 45000 block of Highway 56 Boulevard, which is in Holden Township, north of Kenyon, the Goodhue County Sheriff s Office said in a news release.
Firefighters found the remains in a burnt vehicle near the home.
According to the release, the homeowners and residents have been located. The Sheriff s Office reported that the remains will be autopsied by the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner s Office for identification.
Kenyon Home Destroyed by Fire Mysterious Death Involved
The home of Jerry and Barb Peterson of Kenyon was lost to a New Year s Eve fire that claimed the life of an unidentified person in a vehicle parked outside the home.
The call came in at 6:14 p.m. on December 31, 2020 and was initially phoned in as a fire at the Kenyon Country Club. The Peterson home is located in the 45000 block of Highway 56 Blvd in Holden Township.
The Goodhue County Sheriff s Department news release does not identify the homeowners. I checked with some sources in Kenyon to get that information. Thankfully the Petersons were in Arizona.
