What a year 2020 has been! It has been a turpsy-turvey leap year, an unusual year with lots of ups and downs. Nothing best defined this outgoing year as the COVID-19 pandemic which has claimed over 1.7 million lives out of over 81 million infected persons globally as of Tuesday. At the end of every year, it is fit and proper to have an introspection and retrospection. This reflection is on my fatherland Nigeria and how we fared in four key areas of our national life, namely health, education, security and economy.
Starting with health, COVID–19 exposed the decadent nature of Nigeria’s health facilities. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who is also the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, said on Thursday, April 9, 2020 that he realised how bad it was, after he was appointed to head the team. (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Retired Col. Olayinka Olayanju, the Commandant of the Southwest Security Network in Oyo State, otherwise known as Amotekun, has debunked a report that its operatives killed a student of the University of Ibadan last Sunday.
Olayanju said in a statement issue in Ibadan on Saturday that men of the Amotekun Corps had an encounter with a three-man robbery gang, neutralised its leader and handed the two surviving members to the Atiba Police Station in Oyo town.
“On Sunday, Dec 20, a mobile patrol team of Amotekun operatives from Oyo East and Atiba Local Government Areas ran into an illegal roadblock mounted around Sabo area in Oyo town at about 4 a.m.
Why Amotekun can’t carry firearms, says ex-IG Ehindero

A former Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, has cautioned operatives of the South-West Security Network, codenamed Amotekun against carrying fire arms.
Ehindero spoke on Monday at the Community Policing Sensitisation and Awareness Campaign held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
He said it was unconstitutional for either Amotekun corps or special constables trained for community policing to carry fire arms.
He advised them to strictly adhere to the country’s constitution that forbade them from bearing fire-arm in the course of their operations.
Ehindero said the Amotekun was supposed to be an information and intelligence gathering outfit rather than an arm carrying one.

A retired Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero has appealed to operatives of the South West Security Network (Amotekun Corps) not to be hasty in carrying firearms until there is provision for it in the constitution.
He gave the advice on Monday at a Community Policing Sensitisation and Awareness Campaign organised by the Ogun State Police Command, held in Abeokuta.
The former IGP said the regional corps was established by the governors of the Southwest for information and intelligence gathering in view of the security challenges confronting the region.
He hinted that the law that established the outfit does not make provision for arm-bearing until the constitution is amended.
