SWRHA: Blood clots not linked to AstraZeneca vaccine

SWRHA: Blood clots not linked to AstraZeneca vaccine A vial of AstraZeneca vaccine. Photo by Ayanna Kinsale - The South-West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) has said blood clots identified in a patient who had recently been vaccinated were not linked to the Oxford AstraZeneca covid19 vaccine. In a statement, the authority said it had completed its investigation after the case was brought to its attention in a media report on April 13. In the report, relatives of a patient alleged a correlation between the administration of the vaccine and a thrombus (blood clot) suffered by the patient. “The SWRHA advises that following a preliminary clinical investigation of the circumstances, there is no evidence the patient’s condition is linked to the vaccine,” said the statement. Any report to the contrary, it said, is therefore inaccurate and greatly misleading.”

Port of Spain, 13 th April, 2021 - The Ministry of Health advises the population that there is a robust process in place to monitor the use of COVID-19 vaccines. The Ministry strongly denies the allegation that COVID-19 vaccines are missing from the Couva District Health Facility. Dr. Brian Armour, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA), stated that “there is absolutely no truth to the claim of missing COVID-19 vaccines. This allegation was brought to my attention yesterday by staff of the facility. Subsequent investigations were conducted and proved that this was false.” The CEO also indicated that the health facilities “conduct daily reconciliations[1] of vaccines and there has been no discrepancy in the COVID-19 vaccine stock.”
