York County school districts launch summer meal programs to feed kids
York Dispatch
With food insecurity rates rising across Pennsylvania, several local school districts have started free summer meal programs to get food to families in need.
At least seven of York County s 16 public school districts are advertising summer meal programs on their websites, all of which have already launched or will launch next week.
The COVID-19 pandemic elevated the need for these programs as food insecurity levels rose statewide. According to the nonprofit Communities In Schools of Pennsylvania, food insecurity for children in the state rose from 15% to 35% during the pandemic, partially due to the increase in at-home learning limiting food access in some households.
Thumbs up for the York College Promise, which will open the doors to higher education for dozens of York-area high school graduates who might not otherwise be able to further their educations.
Southern York County schools to retire Native American mascot
York Dispatch
The Southern York County School District will no longer use its Native American mascot following a board decision Thursday night.
The board voted 7-2 Thursday to retire the Susquehannock High School mascot, ending a controversial debate that started nearly a year ago. The district will keep the terms Susquehannock and Warriors as part of its branding.
Students will design the new logo. Superintendent Sandra Lemmon said the board will receive its first update on the transition next month.
Officials started discussing the mascot last year, following calls for the district to change it. It came amid nationwide criticism of Native American mascots, which led the Washington, D.C. football team, formerly known as the Redskins, to rebrand.
