SOUTH BEND â After South Bend Community School Corp. Superintendent Todd Cummings told the board Monday night that he wanted to ârightsizeâ the districtâs buildings by closing two underutilized elementary schools and possibly a high school, many people cried foul on social media.
Why would the corporation need to close schools after voters June 2 approved a property tax hike referendum to generate $220 million over the next eight years?
The money was supposed to be spent on building upgrades, teacher raises and other priorities.
But while they didnât specify before the vote exactly how the new money would be spent or which buildings might be closed to save money, school officials had been clear in their public statements that some closures were likely coming with or without the new revenue, as 15 district buildings were using less than 70% of their capacity.
