President Joe Bidenâs plans to allow more refugees into the country could include the South Bend area.
United Religious Community of St. Joseph County Inc. is applying to become a refugee resettlement community used by Elkhart-based Church World Service, one of nine organizations that contract with the federal government to help refugees establish homes in the United States, said John Pinter, URCâs director.
If approved, the county could expect to receive 50 to 120 refugees from October through the end of next year, based on the numbers who came from 2007 to 2013, the last time the county was a site.

SOUTH BEND â South Bend schools is celebrating the launch of its participation in a state certification program for high school health sciences instruction.
South Bendâs health sciences program, housed at Clay High School, is joining the State Earn and Learn, or SEAL, certification program, which allows high school students to directly enter the workforce with internship, job shadowing or other hands-on experience.
The SEAL certification program is supported through federal funding.
During the pandemic, South Bend students have earned this experience through partnerships with local assisted living organizations like Creekside Village, Home Instead home care and Grand Emerald Place, according to a district news release.
