Fears over more town centre flats as Lava Lounge demolition plan approved

A FORMER town centre nightclub is set to be turned into a six-storey block of flats. Council planners have given the green light in principle to Tunley Properties proposal to demolish the disused Lava Lounge in Fleet Street and build a tower with 25 flats above a ground floor commercial unit. The building has been empty and unused. The scheme got the go ahead despite opposition from South Swindon Parish Council and the owner of the building next door. Swindon Shuffle and council unite for music festival

MDBYD Festival organiser Ed Dyer, Chairman of South Swindon Parish Council Chris Watts, Councillor Neil Hopkins, Councillor Nadine Watts and Gastech s Aidan Watts SWINDON Shuffle co-organiser Ed Dyer has teamed up with South Swindon Parish Council for a music festival at Town Gardens bowl next month for Prospect Hospice. The My Dad’s Bigger than Your Dad festival will run on 28 August from midday until 10pm and is a festival dedicated to ex-landlord at The Victoria Dave Young, who passed away in June at Prospect Hospice. Dave’s former band The Boys from County Hell will be headlining the lineup and Ed has spoken about Dave’s legacy alongside how the festival came about.

Heritage Action Zone brightened up by volunteers

Volunteers have been hard at work giving Swindon’s historic heart some attention. Members of Swindon Borough Council’s housing team were joined by volunteers from the Mechanics Institution Trust, property maintenance company Quicksons and South Swindon Parish Council to weed and replant the brick street planters along Faringdon Road. The plants were provided by Quicksons, which carry out the maintenance of the Railway Village cottages. Karen Phimister, the council’s Heritage Action Zone project officer, said: “It might seem that tasks like street planting are not worth doing when we have buildings needing refurbishment and public realm schemes to deliver.

Have your say with second online survey for GWR Park

The borough council’s second online survey on the GWR Park in Faringdon Road has gone live. The first, back in May drew responses from more than 400 people and will form a draft conservation management plan. This document will set out suggested improvements for the park over the next 10 years and the support available to South Swindon Parish Council with managing it. Heritage Action Zone project officer Karen Phimister said: “We had a great response from people from the first survey. But we would like to know if everybody agrees with the changes that will be made so we can respond to the conservation management plan.”
