Dive Brief:
More than 700 nurses at Tenet s St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, remain on strike after the two sides sat down to their first bargaining session since the work stoppage began March 8. The Monday meeting was futile, and another session has not yet been scheduled.
The Massachusetts Nurses Association, which represents the nurses, said Tenet came to the table with a proposal that did not address the safer staffing standards nurses raised before going on strike, and ignored guidance given through a federal mediator on what was needed to reach a settlement.
St. Vincent CEO Carolyn Jackson said she expects the union to bring a counterproposal to the mediator and request another meeting. We are waiting for them to come back to continue discussions, and we will go from there, she said.
Wall Street and Silicon Valley have little to show for diversity pledges, critics say By Kate Gibson The Diversity Dilemma
A clash between Wells Fargo and a prominent union investor over racial equity at the banking giant highlights the mounting pressure on some of America s biggest companies to follow through on their pledges to improve their diversity practices.
Wells Fargo is urging shareholders on Tuesday to vote against a proposal calling on the lender to improve its racial diversity policies for employees as well as assess the company s impact on communities of color. According to a regulatory filing, the Service Employees International Union pension plan proposal calls for the bank to conduct an internal review to help identify, prioritize, remedy and avoid adverse impacts on nonwhite stakeholders and communities of color. The findings would then be publicly disclosed on the company s website.
Amazon apologizes for denying that its drivers pee in bottles By Aimee Picchi Amazon union vote count underway
Amazon apologized for disputing a lawmaker s claim that its workers urinate in bottles, admitting in a Friday blog post that it was incorrect to deny the report. The online retailer said the issue affects drivers, not employees in its many warehouses across the U.S.
Questions about whether Amazon workers operating under severe time constraints sometimes resort to urinating in bottles surfaced in a 2018 book by British journalist James Bloodworth, who went undercover to briefly work at an Amazon warehouse in documenting the hardship of low-wage work in the U.K. In his account, he came across what appeared like a bottle of urine hidden on a warehouse shelf, which he assumed was one worker s solution to the difficulty of squeezing in bathroom breaks at the massive facility.
