Project to install historic marker in Garrett wrapping up

GARRETT — DeKalb County is poised to receive its fifth official state historic marker approved by the Indiana Historical Bureau — honoring film star John Bowersox, who went by the stage name of John Bowers. DeKalb County Historian John Bry has made it his mission to obtain more historic markers for the county during his tenure by applying to the state agency that reviews and approves topics of significance from Indiana history. The historic marker honoring the life and work of Bowersox will be placed in Garrett. It originally was to be completed in 2020 but was suspended due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Bry now is seeking to wrap up the project.

COVID-19 Response Grant application open until Feb. 26 DeKALB The DeKalb County Community Foundation is taking applications for round four of COVID-19 Response Grants until Feb. 26 to support nonprofit and public sector service organizations.  “The DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund exists to expedite charitable resources to nonprofit and community organizations responding to COVID-19 related needs throughout DeKalb County,” according to the DeKalb County Community Foundation website. “Resources are granted where they are needed most, with an initial focus on the basic needs of those most significantly impacted by this crisis.” The grants help with recovery efforts for the non-profits that were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations that received a grant during phase three include Children’s Home & Aid, Equine Dreams and Opportunity House, Inc.  

Morrow named community foundation board president

$30k state grant to aid efforts in racial healing initiatives

Northern Star DeKALB – The Illinois Department of Human Services is providing a $30,000 Healing Illinois grant to fund local community work focused to help make headway for racial healing, according to a Tuesday news release.  The Dekalb County Community Foundation has also donated $5,000 in support of the Belonging creation. The grant is in partnership with NIU, the City of Dekalb, Family Service Agency, Ellwood Museum and the Dekalb County History Center, according to the news release.  The grant from the State of Illinois is aimed toward accelerating progress toward the creation of a Belonging Leadership Council and public art and engagement activities.

Tri Kappa emphasizes importance of mammograms

AUBURN — As residents ring in 2021, Auburn Tri Kappa is reminding DeKalb County residents to schedule their mammograms for the year and continue breast self-awareness. According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. With busy schedules, women often neglect having their yearly breast cancer screening as recommended by the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer diagnosed in the early stages has a 98% cure rate. However, breast cancer remains the second-highest cause of cancer death among women. The mission of Auburn Tri Kappa Pink Out is a call to action and education of community members about the crucial importance of early detection. Auburn Tri Kappa has established a financial aid fund available to DeKalb County residents in need of assistance with the cost of screenings, diagnostic testing, or treatment of breast cancer.
