Twenty-two pharaoh mummies walked the streets of Cairo on Saturday evening in a stunning royal procession from the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square to the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat. The event marked the official launch of NMEC.

Against the backdrop of fireworks, the mummies – 18 kings and four queens – travelled in order of age on purpose-built gold-colored pharaonic chariots, equipped with an air ride suspension system to absorb vibrations, and bearing the name of their occupants in Arabic, English, and hieroglyphics. Among them were the notable mummies of Seti I, Ahmose-Nefertari, and Ramses II.
They were transported to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in special capsules.
A grand parade displaying 22 of Egypt s ancient royal mummies passed through Cairo s streets on Saturday.
The convoy transported 18 kings and four queens from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, a city about 3 miles outside the capital.
Each mummy was carried in a specially-designed glass capsule with shock-absorbers so they wouldn t get damaged during transportation, Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass told Reuters.

The capsules were placed on carts that looked similar to horse-drawn war chariots and designed to provide stability.

Egypt parades trove of ancient royal mummies on Cairo’s streets
Egypt on Saturday paraded 22 ancient royal mummies along the streets of Cairo, as the country hopes to draw global attention to its rich wealth of antiquities.
The parade marked the transfer of the mummies from their long residence at the Egyptian Museum in iconic Tahrir Square in central Cairo to a new Cairo museum in the historic area of al-Fustat.
