Mary Kathryn Nagle Changes the Story, in Court and Onstage

Save this story for later. Two years ago, the House Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States held a hearing on the murder and disappearance of Native women. Native women are murdered on reservations at a rate ten times the national average; there were more than five thousand reported cases of missing Native women in 2016 alone, and many more cases go unreported. Among the witnesses at the hearing was Mary Kathryn Nagle, the legal counsel for the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center and an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Nagle, in her testimony, noted that tribal nations do not have legal jurisdiction over non-Natives who commit crimes on reservations. This is one of the reasons, she said, that those who assault or murder Native women are so rarely caught and prosecuted. The Supreme Court revoked that jurisdiction in 1978; it was restored, in 2013, by a new provision in the Violence Against Women Act, which was reauthorized that year. But

Smithsonian Institution Marks 175th Anniversary - New Delhi Times - India s Only International Newspaper

April 5, 2021 Share  The Smithsonian Institution is marking its 175th anniversary this year, and it expects to celebrate later this year with a futuristic exhibition that includes a robot to help prevent loneliness and a sail for deep space travel. The Smithsonian is the world’s largest museum complex, consisting of 19 museums, nine research centers, and the National Zoo. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1846, the Smithsonian was the brainchild of James Smithson, a wealthy English chemist who left his estate to the United States for the establishment of an institution in the nation’s capital “for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” With that broad concept, said Smithsonian historian Pamela Henson, the institution began collecting a vast array of items ranging from artwork to insects.

Food remains a family tradition among tribal members in Oklahoma

Kimberly Burk Tricia Fields Alexander discovered her passion early on.  “A lot of the girls, their goal was to be the powwow princess,” said Alexander, who is enrolled Muscogee (Creek) and lives in Glenpool.  “I wanted to be the head cook. I always gravitated to the women with the aprons on.”  The women who prepared the food for tribal ceremonies and powwows would put her to work washing potatoes or wiping counters.  “It always made me feel good to be a part of it, to help,” said Alexander, a tribal youth wellness coordinator and owner of Autumn Star Catering.  As with many American Indians, cooking was a family affair for Alexander. But she credits much of her knowledge of traditional cooking to the tribal ceremonies she attended every summer weekend, including the Cheyenne Sun Dances to which they were invited by her father’s best friend.
