They function as complex gateways to culture, history, philosophy and social structures. The modern museum is a byproduct of 18th- and 19th-century elitism and colonialism, when traditional pillars of Western civilization (Classical Greece, Ancient Rome, Italian Renaissance, etc.) were of utmost importance. From its inception, the modern museum in the United States has primarily maintained a Eurocentric focus, historically grounded in exclusionary practices based on social, cultural and racial structures.
