Four Johns Hopkins University students have been awarded Goldwater Scholarships for their research and achievements in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.
Juniors Bruce Enzmann, Min Jae Kim, Shiker Nair, and Aaditya Ra are among a cohort of 410 Goldwater Scholars selected for 2021–22 from an estimated pool of more than 5,000 applicants. Additionally, as part of JHU s Research Experience for Undergraduates program, faculty member Muyinatu Bell mentored Reese Dunne from Mississippi State University who also won a Goldwater Scholarship citing research
Shashaank Narayanan have been awarded the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.
With an annual $34,000 stipend and a $12,000 cost of education allowance per year for three years,
Copeland will continue her work investigating the intersection of aging and reading comprehension as a Ph.D. candidate in the Cognition and Neural Science Program at the University of Utah.
“This award will likely completely alter the trajectory of my career as a scientist,” said Copeland, “as it provides both early-career prestige and freedom to pursue my own research questions.”
The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship is the oldest graduate fellowship program in the country that supports graduate students in the sciences, social sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics. Its scholars have become Nobel laureates and members of the National Academy of Sciences. More than 13,000 applicants pursued the award this year.

Claire Teitelbaum is finishing up a Ph.D. in ecology. She studies animal movement patterns and how animals respond to human development. This research could later be used to conserve species. She aims to better understand all the ways that nature “works.” “Ecology is an amazing field because everything that we study is so complex and everything interacts with everything else at some level. I am also committed to close collaborations with diverse people, since more diversity lends more views of the same problem,” she said.

A UConn undergraduate, three graduate students, and 10 alumni have earned National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships (NSF-GRFP).
The oldest graduate fellowship of its kind, the NSF-GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding students in NSF-supported disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited institutions in the United States. In addition to a three-year annual stipend of $34,000, plus another $12,000 paid to the student’s home institution, fellows have access to a wide range of professional development opportunities over the course of their graduate careers.
